The Kingdom of Sukothai

The city of Sukhothai was part of the Khmer empire until 1238, when two Thai chieftains, Pho Khun Pha Muang and Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao, seceded and established a Thai kingdom. Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao later became the first king of Sukhothai, Pho Khun Si Indrathit (or Intradit). This event traditionally marks the founding of the modern Thai nation, although other less well-known Thai kingdoms, such as Lanna, Phayao and Chiang Saen, were established around the same time.
Sukhothai expanded by forming alliances with the other Thai kingdoms, adopting Theravada Buddhism as the state religion with the help of Ceylonese monks. Intradit was succeeded by his son Pho Khun Ban Muang, who was followed in 1278 by his brother, Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng. Under King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, as he became known, who ruled for forty years, Sukhothai enjoyed a golden age of prosperity.

Established in 1984 in Bangkok, Thailand Top Crafts Co., Ltd., produces and exports worldwide Thailand handicraftss, gifts and collectibles for wholesale and retail.

The more than 22,000 hand crafted items for home decoration and gifts, that can be seen in our Bangkok show rooms, are made of wood, ceramics, paper, cotton, bronze and bamboo to name a few. We use natural raw materials, with most Thailand handicrafts models created by our French designer.

The basic components of our products are made at home by farmers and villagers under supervision of our Top Crafts Quality Control department. These components are then assembled in our factory before being treated, colored, waxed, etc., depending on their nature.

After passing our 4th and final QC check the finished products are packed, bar-coded, and loaded in containers in our own warehouse which is "under customs" (the container goes directly from our warehouse to the shipping vessel deck with no need to stop at the port).

Whether you want to launch a new line or take advantage of our purchasing clout thanks to more than 20 years experience in Thailand, Top Crafts Co., Ltd. is your ideal partner.

The "Wai" in Thai Culture

The "Wai" is the Thai way to greet and pay respect. A "Wai" is the equivalent of handshake, bow or tip of the hat in other countries and more. Each "Wai" says a slightly different thing, depending on the occasion and social status of the people involved.

When a person "wais" he or she puts the palms together, placing the fingers at chin level and bowing a bit.

A "wai"-ing is also a wordless way to say "Sawasdee" (hello or good bye) and "thank you". Thais use this gesture a lot.

A Thai "wais" a Buddha image, a religious shrine, a monk and a person of high status. Exactly who and when to "wai" is, however, strictly a matter of social etiquette learned from childhood.
